Lusso Bioclimatic Pergola Installation in Essex

Creating a Year-Round Outdoor Living Space on the Essex Coast

For a private home near Colchester in Essex, the owners wanted to transform their large patio into a versatile space that could be enjoyed comfortably throughout the seasons. With beautiful countryside and coastal views, the property deserved an outdoor solution that would not only complement its striking architecture but also provide practical protection from the elements.

The Brief

The homeowners approached Azure Outdoor Living with a clear goal:

  • Design a year-round outdoor living area for relaxing and entertaining.
  • Replace the existing timber brise soleil, which offered little flexibility.
  • Blend seamlessly with the modern glass and timber façade of the home.
  • Incorporate privacy, shading and weather protection while retaining the views.

Working closely with the property’s builders and architects, we reviewed technical drawings and structural details to ensure a solution that was both bespoke and perfectly integrated.

Our Solution

After a showroom consultation and a full on-site survey, we recommended the Lusso Bioclimatic Pergola – one of the most advanced outdoor living systems available.

Final Specifications

  • Product: Lusso Bioclimatic Pergola
  • Dimensions: 4115mm wide × 4880mm projection × 2796mm high
  • Frame Colour: Anthracite Grey RAL 7016 (structured)
  • Louvre Colour: White RAL 9010 (structured)
  • Zip Screen Fabric: Selection 10010
  • Features: Motorised louvred roof, integrated drop-down blind

The anthracite grey frame complemented the property’s contemporary façade, while the crisp white louvres kept the space bright and modern. The integrated motorised zip screen offered instant shade, privacy, and wind protection — without blocking the surrounding views.

Overcoming Structural Challenges

This project was more complex than a typical pergola installation.

To accommodate the Lusso Pergola, the existing brise soleil had to be partially removed. Once dismantled, our team cut back the surrounding timber cladding and carefully inserted a new structural timber into the void.

For strength and stability, we drilled through the timber and into the property’s RSJ (rolled steel joist). Using specialist blind bolts, we locked the new timber securely into place, creating a hidden but incredibly strong structural anchor point.

We also had to be exceptionally precise with the placement of the pergola legs. Each post had to align perfectly — sitting flush in front of the client’s metal balustrade on one side while projecting neatly onto the patio on the other. This demanded millimetre-accurate surveying and measurement, ensuring both the structural integrity and the visual harmony of the installation.

This solution not only ensured safety and strength but also showcased the level of craftsmanship needed to integrate seamlessly with the home’s existing architecture.

The Process

  • Consultation & Showroom Visit – The clients explored options at our Norfolk showroom and saw the Lusso system in action.
  • Collaboration with Builders – Architectural and structural drawings were reviewed in detail.
  • Survey & CAD Drawings – A full technical site survey captured every detail, followed by precise CAD visuals for approval.
  • Structural Adaptations – Brise soleil removal, cladding modifications, timber insert, and RSJ blind bolt fixings.
  • Precision Engineering – Pergola legs set out with exact alignment to the balustrade and patio edge.
  • Specification Sign-Off – Final colours and fabrics chosen to complement the property.
  • Stage Payments & Production – Transparent payment schedule before manufacturing began.
  • Installation – Pergola expertly fitted, integrating seamlessly with the patio and glass balustrade.

The Outcome

The completed pergola has elevated the property’s outdoor living potential:

  • Flexible comfort – Motorised louvres allow instant adjustment of sunlight, shade, and airflow.
  • Privacy on demand – The integrated zip screen offers shelter and seclusion without compromising the view.
  • Architectural harmony – The pergola aligns beautifully with the home’s glass balustrade and timber cladding.
  • Engineered precision – From the RSJ reinforcement to the millimetre-perfect leg placement, the installation highlights both structural and aesthetic excellence.
  • Year-round usability – From summer dining to sheltered autumn evenings, the terrace is now a true all-season retreat.
