Bespoke Glass Carport in Poole, Dorset: Designed and Engineered Around a Mature Pine Tree

Azure Outdoor Living designed, surveyed, engineered and installed a bespoke glass carport for a contemporary home in Poole, Dorset, built around a mature pine tree that now rises through the roof. The structure adapts the Prime Veranda system into a fully bespoke aluminium and laminated glass canopy, with a 10.76mm clear laminated safety glass roof on a slim aluminium frame finished in RAL 7016 anthracite grey.

It spans roughly 6.4 metres by 4.5 metres and pitches at 10 degrees across six glazed bays, on a trapezoidal plan that widens towards the front. Azure handled the project end to end, from design consultation and technical survey through to installation.

The Brief

The homeowners wanted covered parking that read as part of the house rather than an addition to it. The property already had a strong contemporary identity, with timber cladding, clean horizontal lines and extensive glazing, so any new structure had to sit within that language instead of competing with it. A standard rectangular carport would have fought the proportions of the entrance and, more decisively, would have meant removing the mature pine tree that anchors the front of the plot.

Keeping the tree was non-negotiable for the client, which ruled out every modular option from the outset. The brief was therefore not to supply a product but to engineer a canopy around three fixed realities: the architecture of the house, the levels of the site, and a living tree that had to pass cleanly through the finished roof.

The Challenges

  1. Retaining a living tree through a glazed roof. The pine sat almost centrally in the proposed footprint and had to remain, so the roof needed a weatherproof opening that could also accommodate the tree’s movement and future growth.
  2. A trapezoidal footprint. The plot is wider at the front than at the house and one side rakes in, so the roof is a trapezoidal plan rather than a rectangle. The outer bay is a bespoke angled glass panel, and the whole six-bay layout had to be set out around that taper.
  3. A sloping driveway. Ground levels fell across the site, so every support position and finished height had to be calculated to keep the completed canopy reading as level.
  4. A tight installation corridor. Along one side the frame had to sit between the boundary fence and a raised sleeper retaining wall, leaving almost no tolerance once components were manufactured.
  5. A seamless junction with the house. The rear of the structure had to tie into the existing roofline at the correct pitch while keeping clean architectural lines.

The Process

Survey

Because every fixed element influenced the next, no measurement could be treated in isolation. The team recorded the house junction, the retaining wall and fence line, the falling driveway levels, the trapezoidal boundary and the exact position of the tree, then used the trunk as a primary reference point for the surrounding geometry. A change to the roof pitch would move the house connection, and a change to a support position would alter the glass layout, so the whole survey was resolved as a single interdependent model rather than a set of separate dimensions. The finished roof falls at 10 degrees from the house to the front eaves.

Designing around the tree

Azure consulted a qualified arborist to understand the pine’s likely movement and growth before fixing the roof opening [CONFIRM name if approved]. Rather than a rigid frame around the trunk, which would eventually fail, the roof was detailed with a framed opening in the second bay and a bespoke flexible foam collar that seals against weather while allowing the tree to move independently of the structure. From below, the trunk appears to rise straight through the glass, with the engineering behind the seal hidden.

Manufacture

With approval drawings signed off, the aluminium profiles, the slim 80mm posts and the laminated glass panels were cut to the drawings, with the raked outer bay and the framed tree opening in the second bay manufactured specifically for this plot. There was minimal tolerance for error: each survey dimension had to translate exactly into manufacture, because there would be no meaningful on-site adjustment once installation began.

Installation

On a constrained site with a sloping driveway and restricted access, the aluminium frame was erected and checked for alignment before any glazing began. Only once the frame was confirmed true were the laminated glass roof panels lifted into position using specialist lifting equipment [CONFIRM the kit], after which the tree collar and the concealed lighting channels were finished.

The Result

The finished carport, roughly 6.4 metres by 4.5 metres, gives the home year-round covered parking and a brighter, sheltered approach, while the laminated glass roof keeps the driveway open to daylight and the anthracite frame echoes the existing architectural detailing. The mature pine tree remains the focal point of the entrance, framed by the glazing rather than lost to it, and the canopy sits within the contemporary lines of the house rather than reading as something bolted on to the front of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a glass roof be built around an existing tree?

Yes, when the roof opening and seal are engineered for that specific tree. A tree keeps growing and moves in the wind, so the detail has to allow that movement rather than clamp it.
