One company calls it a pergola, another a bioclimatic pergola. Elsewhere you will see aluminium pergolas, louvred roofs, retractable roofs, verandas, garden rooms, sunrooms and glass rooms, and then a second layer of terms such as thermally broken systems, frameless glazing, rotating louvres, ZIP screens and insulated slabs. Before you have compared a single product, you are trying to learn a vocabulary you never asked for.

We see this every day. Most people do not contact us because they have chosen a product. They contact us because they want somewhere to entertain, a way to enjoy the garden more often, a better connection between the house and the outside, more natural light, a warmer room, or an improvement that genuinely adds value. The product almost always comes afterwards. The real challenge is working out which solution is actually right for the project.

A conversation we have almost every week

Recently a customer came to us looking for a pergola. After talking through how they wanted to use the space, it became clear a pergola was not the best answer. What they really wanted was a room they could use comfortably through the colder months, one that felt much closer to an extension of the home. The final recommendation was not a pergola at all. • A glass veranda is a permanent overhead glass canopy that shelters the space from above while keeping it open to the garden. It is the simplest way to keep a patio usable in light weather.
• A glass room is an enclosed glazed structure with sliding glass sides, so the space is protected from rain and wind and can be enjoyed for much more of the year. It behaves like a modern garden room rather than an extension, and it is the contemporary alternative many people are really looking for when they search for a conservatory.
• A thermally broken glass room is built as part of the home, using insulated glazing and thermally broken aluminium, and usually an insulated slab and building works. It performs close to a heated extension and is the right choice when you want a room that stays comfortable in winter.
